About the test
What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a safe and non-invasive ultrasound scan that uses sound waves to produce detailed moving images of the heart.
The test helps doctors assess:
- Heart structure and size
- Heart pumping function
- Heart valve performance
- Blood flow through the heart
As no radiation is used, echocardiograms are considered a safe and reliable method for investigating a wide range of heart conditions.
When an Echocardiogram May Be Recommended
Your GP may recommend an echocardiogram if you are experiencing:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort or chest pain
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure
- Heart murmur
- Dizziness or fainting episodes
Ongoing monitoring
Echocardiograms are also commonly used to monitor existing heart conditions, valve disease, or other cardiac abnormalities.
Â
Typical appointment duration: approximately 30–45 minutes.
