HIV Testing, Prevention & Treatment
Confidential HIV Care at Cranbourne East Family Clinic
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a manageable long-term condition, and with early diagnosis and modern treatment, people living with HIV can enjoy long, healthy lives. At Cranbourne East Family Clinic, we provide confidential HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and ongoing support in a safe, respectful, and non-judgemental environment.
Around 29,000 Australians are currently living with HIV, with more than 90% aware of their diagnosis. Thanks to major advances in medical treatment, HIV is no longer considered a life-limiting condition for most people. Individuals diagnosed early and receiving appropriate care can expect a near-normal life expectancy.
Regular HIV testing remains essential, particularly for people with higher-risk exposure, as early diagnosis leads to better health outcomes and helps prevent transmission.
HIV Testing and Diagnosis
Why HIV Testing Matters
Early HIV testing plays a vital role in protecting your health and preventing the spread of HIV. As many people experience no symptoms in the early stages, regular testing is recommended for sexually active individuals and those at increased risk.
Testing is simple, confidential, and may involve:
- Blood tests
- Sexual health assessments
- Discussion of symptoms and medical history
- Screening for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Our doctors can provide guidance, counselling, and support throughout the testing process.
HIV Treatment & U=U
Modern HIV treatment uses highly effective antiretroviral medications that can reduce the virus to an undetectable viral load. Many people successfully manage HIV with a single daily tablet, allowing them to live long, healthy, and active lives. When HIV is consistently treated and remains undetectable, it cannot be sexually transmitted to partners. This is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable), highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, ongoing treatment, and regular medical care.
HIV Prevention with PrEP
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication for people who do not have HIV but may be at increased risk of exposure. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is more than 99% effective at preventing HIV through sexual contact. Our experienced GPs provide confidential PrEP assessments, prescriptions, regular monitoring, and personalised advice to help you stay protected.
